The James Site - Space

Space - The Final Frontier

A Moonwalker got me involved in the National Space Society of Australia!!

I got interested in space in 1990 when I was doing nights at 2CC in Canberra. Rhonda bought me a book on the early manned missions - something to read when I couldn't sleep after my air shifts. She created a monster after that!

My interest continued through our move to Echuca / Deniliquin then on to 2SM in Sydney. While at 2SM in 1994, I had the good fortune to interview the Commander of Apollo 15, Dave Scott. He was here as Keynote Speaker for a conference organised by the National Space Society of Australia (NSSA).

I researched my topic dilligently then went to the hotel to do the interview. Dave was great but when I got to the part where I said "You astronauts were a tight bunch" you could see him tense up (probably thought I was going to ask about some of the naughty things the Astronauts got up to). I followed on and said "Didn't you all live in the same suburbs in Houston? Who were your neighbours?" You could see him sigh in relief and after that he gave me a really great interview. I still have it on tape!

Anyway, apparently afterwards, Dave was talking to Kirby Ikin, the Chairman of the NSSA and Dave told him he just got interviewed by this radio guy who seems to know his stuff, Kirby had better give him a call!.

About a week later I got an invite to go to one of the Space Society's chapter meetings.......and.......the rest is history!

I've seen Dave several times since then, he always remembers me and always has a tasty little tidbit about his mission to the moon that not many people know about. He knows I love that sort of stuff!

So there you go, I got a reference from a Moonwalking Astronaut!

So, what else have we got up to?

Through my involvement in the National Space society of Australia, I've got to do some amazing things in the past decade or so. This will be a bit of a "brag" page, a story page, some photos all to do with the Space Society, astronauts, pictures I like, stories to tell.......... open wide, come inside...it's play school! ( the end bit of that sentence is the theme from an Aussie Kids show for pre-schoolers - been going since the 60's)

Here's a couple of photos from Harrison Schmitt's talk on the Central Coast..
